Sport Psychology

Sport psychology is the science that studies the psychological aspects of people involved with sport and physical exercise.

The main objectives of this area are to analyze and understand how psychological aspects affect performance in sports and how physical exercise can benefit the mental health and emotional development of those who practice it. That is why this area is also known as Sport and Physical Activity Psychology.

However, there are other areas that the sports psychologist can act on besides high performance and health promotion. He also works in the field of school sports, where the questions of practitioners of sports activities in the school context will be worked on (usually in conjunction with physical education professionals); in long-term training, which works from the initiative of children and young people in pedagogical and competitive sports practices to the most mature phase of life, working so that this development and relationship with sport is as beneficial and healthy as possible; in rehabilitation, whether in the rehabilitation of an athlete who has suffered an injury and has to recover to return to high performance, or to help a person recover or adapt to a weakened health situation (assist in the treatment of obesity, heart disease, adaptation who had serious injuries among others); put an end to work in social projects, which uses sport to better educate and socialize people in needy communities.

It is worth remembering that one of the main differences between the sports psychologist and the clinical psychologist is that he will work on the spot and not in the office. Although sometimes there may be one or another service with the athlete in the office, but always keeping the focus on issues involved with the sport.
